About the numbers

LRV, light reflectance value, is how much light a color reflects: 0 is black, 100 is pure white. The numbers here are Benjamin Moore’s own, from its Master Color Index. A handful of specialty colors use a calculated LRV instead, marked with an asterisk on the swatch.

Chroma is how strong a color is, on the Munsell scale: 0 is a true gray, and the higher the number, the stronger the color. Most whites and greiges sit under 1.5. Our chroma numbers are close estimates calculated from each color, not readings from a Munsell chip book.

Outside the house

Where no rule applies, a higher LRV keeps a sunny wall cooler. Inside Scottsdale’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands Overlay, exterior paint is capped at LRV 35 and chroma 6; Paradise Valley’s Hillside Development Areas cap it at 38, and the Scottsdale Foothills Overlay at 40 (35 where a lot is also in the ESL Overlay). Outside those areas, your HOA usually sets the rules. Arizona houses typically run the body around LRV 55 to 75, with trim and fascia darker, around 15 to 45. Interior walls aren’t bound by any of this.
