Authentic Mineral Finishes
Lime Wash for Stucco, Brick and Interior Walls
A breathable, slaked-lime coating that ages into a soft, weathered patina. Stocked at Arizona Paint Supply in North Scottsdale, with expert color guidance in person.
Lime wash is one of the oldest wall finishes in the world. Made from slaked lime and water rather than plastic resins, it cures by reacting with carbon dioxide in the air and turns back into mineral limestone, bonding into the surface instead of forming a film on top. The result is a soft, cloudy, matte finish with natural movement and a patina that shifts with the light and deepens with age. At Arizona Paint Supply, lime wash is one of our three most-requested specialty finishes, alongside Moroccan Clay and Concretta, and we carry Meoded’s authentic mineral-based Lime Wash and Lime Wash Base Coat at the store.
What it is
A real mineral finish, not a film paint
Authentic lime wash is made from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) suspended in water, often with natural mineral pigments. Meoded’s Lime Wash is made from slaked limestone, solvent-free, and zero-VOC, with no biocides or preservatives.
Unlike acrylic or latex paint, which dries into a plastic film sitting on top of the wall, lime wash cures through a process called carbonation: the lime reacts with carbon dioxide in the air and slowly converts back into solid calcium carbonate, the same material as limestone. On porous mineral surfaces it effectively becomes part of the wall.
- Slaked-lime mineral coating, not a resin film
- Cures by carbonation (CO2 to calcium carbonate)
- Solvent-free, zero-VOC, no biocides
The look
Soft, cloudy, and matte
Lime wash reads as a velvety, matte surface with gentle mottling and tonal variation no flat paint can reproduce. Brushed on in a cross-hatch pattern, it builds subtle depth and movement, and as it carbonates it blooms into a softly weathered patina.
Lime wash is meant to age. It shifts with daylight across the day and matures over time into the Old-World, European plaster aesthetic that drives its popularity for fireplaces, feature walls, and stucco facades.
Why it performs
Breathable, mold-resistant, UV-stable
Because it is mineral and porous rather than a sealed film, lime wash is fully vapor-permeable. Walls can release moisture instead of trapping it, which is why lime finishes are trusted on historic masonry and breathable wall assemblies.
Its naturally high alkalinity (high pH) makes it resistant to mold and mildew without added biocides, and the cured mineral surface is naturally UV-resistant, so color holds rather than fading. On porous brick, stone, and stucco the bond can last for many years and will not chip, peel, or flake the way a film coating can.
- Vapor-permeable: walls breathe, moisture escapes
- High-pH surface naturally resists mold and mildew
- UV-resistant; won’t peel or flake on masonry
Surfaces & base coat
Where it grips, and why the base coat matters
Lime wash works best on porous, unsealed mineral surfaces: raw brick, stone, stucco, masonry, and lime or clay plaster. On those, you mist the surface with clean water and apply.
Drywall, previously painted walls, and glossy surfaces are not porous in the same way, so the wash has nothing to bond into. That is what Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat is for: it gives the surface the right absorbent mineral key so the lime wash adheres and develops its finish correctly. Skipping it on drywall is the most common reason a lime wash project disappoints.
- Raw brick, stone, stucco, masonry: mist and apply
- Drywall, painted, or glossy: prime with Lime Wash Base Coat first
- Two coats typical, brushed cross-hatch
Interior vs exterior
From fireplace walls to stucco facades
Indoors, lime wash suits living-room and bedroom accent walls, fireplaces, and powder rooms. It holds up well in low-to-moderate-traffic areas; for kitchens, baths, or high-touch spots, Meoded Stain Shield can be applied to make the surface easier to wipe down.
Outdoors, lime wash is a natural fit for stucco, brick, and stone facades, exactly the surfaces that define homes across the Valley. Exteriors should be kept dry and protected from rain for about seven days while the finish carbonates and hardens.

Questions we hear at the counter
What is lime wash made of?
Authentic lime wash is made from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and water, usually with natural mineral pigments. Meoded’s Lime Wash is made from slaked limestone and is solvent-free and zero-VOC. It is a true mineral coating, not an acrylic or latex paint.
How does lime wash cure and harden?
It cures through carbonation. The lime reacts with carbon dioxide in the air and gradually converts back into solid calcium carbonate, the same mineral as limestone. On porous surfaces like brick, stone, and stucco, this forms a mineral bond that becomes part of the wall and continues to harden over time.
Can I use lime wash on drywall?
Yes, but drywall and previously painted or glossy walls must first be primed with Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat. Lime wash bonds by soaking into a porous mineral surface, and drywall doesn’t provide that on its own. The base coat gives the wash the absorbent key it needs so the finish develops and adheres correctly. Raw brick, stone, and stucco only need a light mist of water.
Is lime wash good for exteriors in Arizona’s sun?
It is well suited to it. Lime wash is naturally UV-resistant, so color holds rather than fading, and because it is breathable and mineral-based it bonds to stucco, brick, and stone without forming a film that can peel or blister in the heat. Keep a freshly washed exterior dry for about seven days so it can carbonate and harden.
Does lime wash resist mold and mildew?
Yes. The cured surface has a naturally high alkalinity (high pH) that resists mold and mildew without added biocides or preservatives, and its full vapor-permeability lets walls release moisture instead of trapping it. That combination is a big reason lime finishes are favored on masonry and in breathable wall assemblies.
Is lime wash durable and how do I maintain it?
On porous brick, stone, and stucco it can last for many years and will not chip, peel, or flake the way a film paint can. Interior walls hold up well in low-to-moderate-traffic areas and may need occasional touch-ups. It is not scrub-proof, so clean gently with a soft, damp cloth. For kitchens, baths, or high-touch areas, Meoded Stain Shield makes the surface easier to wipe down.
What are the limitations of lime wash?
It is not waterproof, so it should not be used on shower walls or directly in tub splash zones. The finish is delicate and not scrub-proof, making it best for accent walls and lower-traffic surfaces unless sealed. And on non-porous surfaces it needs the Lime Wash Base Coat to bond properly.
Made for the Valley
Phoenix and Scottsdale homes are built for lime wash. So much of the Valley’s architecture is stucco, brick, and masonry under relentless sun, and those are exactly the surfaces where an authentic mineral finish performs best: breathable so trapped moisture and efflorescence have somewhere to go, UV-resistant so the color holds through Arizona summers, and bonded into the wall so it won’t peel off a hot south-facing facade. For the soft, earthy palettes that HOAs across North Scottsdale and the northeast Valley tend to favor, lime wash gives a weathered, hand-applied look.
