Where paint stops being a color.
Plaster, limewash, metallic and concrete. These are surfaces rather than coatings, they are applied by hand, and they behave differently in this light than anything that comes out of a spray gun. We stock three houses and we know who applies them.
Why
One wall is usually enough.
A specialty finish is a different material from paint, with real depth, so the wall changes as the light crosses it instead of holding one value all day.
Most projects are an entry, a fireplace, a powder room or a hood.

Counter
What does it cost against paint?
Material runs several times a gallon of premium paint per square foot, and labor is the larger half. These are priced as a surface, not as a coat.
Can I apply it myself?
You can buy any of it here either way. The base coats are forgiving and the finish coats are not. On a wall you care about, use someone who does it daily.
How long does a wall take?
Most single-wall projects run three to four days including prep and cure. The prep is the part people underestimate.
Do you tint these in store?
Meoded and the Benjamin Moore Studio Finishes line, yes. Modern Masters metallics and reactives come in factory colors.
Can you match a color I already have?
Bring a chip or a piece of the material. A textured finish will never sit exactly on a paint chip because it is not a flat surface, and the sample board will show you what it does.
