A feature panel in a reactive iron finish, rust and metallic streaks turning under raking light beside a charcoal wall

Specialty finishes

Real metal, rusted on the wall.

Modern Masters puts ground metal in the can. The metallics turn as you walk past them, and the reactives are actual iron and copper that rust and patina on the wall after you brush the activator on. Nothing here is a printed effect.

Metal Effects iron with rust activator

Why

It changes as you walk past.

Metallic pigment lies flat in the film and throws light in one direction. Walk across the room and the wall goes from bright to deep, which a flat color cannot do.

The reactives are a different trick. Iron, copper and bronze particles suspended in the coating, oxidized on purpose with an activator. The rust is real rust, and it keeps developing for a day or two after you stop working.

Both need a controlled surface and controlled light. These are finishes for a powder room, a hood, a front door or a feature panel, and they are wasted on a big flat wall in daylight.

Range

Four Modern Masters lines.

Metallic

Metallic Paint

Ground metal in a water-based film. Turns from bright to deep as you cross the room.

Reactive

Metal Effects

Iron, copper and bronze that oxidize on the wall. Rust and patina, not a painted imitation.

Entry

Front Door Paint

Satin and self-leveling, made for front doors. A special order; ask at the counter.

Texture

Texture & Venetian

Trowel-applied textures and a plaster line for when the surface needs body under the sheen.

Walls

Screens vary and paint shifts with the light in the room. Pick up a sample before you commit to a wall.

The paint around a metallic.

A reflective finish needs a matte surround or it reads as decoration. These are the colors we hand people buying it.

HC-166Kendall Charcoal — the surround that lets a bronze or copper read.
HC-154Hale Navy — a deep matte beside a warm metallic; the classic pairing on a hood.
HC-172Revere Pewter — when the metallic is the only event and everything else steps back.
OC-17White Dove — trim and ceilings, so nothing competes for the reflection.
244Strathmore Manor — a warm body color beside a rusted iron panel.

Does the rust keep going?

It develops for a day or two after the activator goes on, then you seal it and it stops. How far you let it run before sealing is the decision that sets the color.

Will a metallic show roller marks?

Yes, if it is rolled. Metallics are applied in a crosshatch and the direction of the last pass is what you see, which is why it is worth using someone who does it often.

Can reactives go outside?

Iron, copper and bronze all can, sealed. In full Phoenix sun the sealer is doing the real work, so plan on maintenance the way you would with real metal.

Do you tint it in store?

No. Metallic Paint comes in Modern Masters' factory colors, and the reactives come as they are, since the metal in them is the color. Front Door Paint is a special order.

How much do I need?

A reactive is base coat plus activator plus sealer, and the base coat covers less than paint. Bring the square footage and we will work it out at the counter.

Get an applicator who knows reactives.

Reactives in particular are unforgiving once the activator is on. We know who in the Phoenix metro works in them daily. Tell us the surface and we will point you at two or three.
