Benjamin Moore · Stains

Woodluxe

Exterior stain for decks, fences and siding, water-based or oil, from see-the-grain translucent to solid color.

What it’s for

In Arizona a stain’s real job is standing up to the sun, and pigment is what does it. Pick the opacity by how much grain you want to see, knowing that the more color a stain carries, the longer it holds on a deck in full sun.

The water-based line comes in all four opacities, dries to the touch in an hour and cleans up with water. Its solid covers worn or mismatched boards and can change a deck’s color completely. The oil-based line soaks in and brings up the grain, in translucent, semi-transparent and semi-solid.

Most stain failures start with prep. The wood has to be dry and clean, and a drop of water should soak in rather than bead. Translucent through semi-solid go on in one even coat; a heavy second coat is how they peel. Stain between 40°F and 90°F and out of direct sun, which in summer means early morning, and keep furniture off a deck for 48 hours.

Old solid stain that’s faded but not flaking doesn’t need stripping. Clean it and recoat with the solid.
