Benjamin Moore HP
Coatings for metal, concrete and hard-working floors: direct-to-metal enamels, primers, epoxies and urethane.
What it’s for
Benjamin Moore HP is the line for surfaces that take more than ordinary wear: steel railings and gates, metal doors, equipment, block walls and concrete floors. It’s what we reach for when wall paint would wear through or rust would come back.
For most metal, start with Command. It’s a one-part waterborne urethane in gloss or satin that dries to the touch in 15 minutes and goes back into use the next day. Bare steel gets Acrylic Metal Primer first. Galvanized, aluminum and other slick metals take Waterborne Bonding Primer, or Command on its own.
A garage or shop floor is a system, not a can: degrease, prime the concrete, then epoxy. Epoxy yellows and chalks in sunlight, so anywhere the sun reaches it needs a non-yellowing urethane over it. Heat shortens epoxy’s working time, too. Mixed epoxy that lasts seven hours at 77°F lasts three at 100°F, so in a closed Arizona garage, mix small batches and start early.
Much of the line is two-part and made for painters and facility crews. Tell us the surface and how it gets used, and we’ll lay out the system: what goes first, what goes on top, and how long before it’s back in service.
Tight surface rust doesn’t always have to come off down to bare metal. Acrylic Metal Primer goes over tightly bonded rust in mild exposures, and the epoxy primer handles worse.
