What DTM is

Direct-to-Metal: fewer coats, built-in rust control

Direct-to-metal (DTM) coatings bond to prepared metal without a separate primer. Rust-inhibitive resins are built into a single product, so a job that once needed a primer, a midcoat, and a topcoat can often be handled in fewer coats.

Traditional heavy-duty steel systems still layer a primer, an epoxy midcoat, and a topcoat. Modern DTM acrylics serve as durable single-coat alternatives for light-to-moderate service, which saves labor and shortens the time a space is out of use.

  • Bonds to prepared metal without a standalone primer
  • Rust-inhibitive resin fights corrosion on ferrous substrates
  • Single-coat options reduce labor and downtime
  • Primer-plus-topcoat systems available for severe service

Choosing a system

Epoxy, enamel, or DTM acrylic — match the coating to the job

The right resin depends on what the surface has to survive. Epoxies bring chemical and abrasion resistance. DTM acrylics deliver speed and low odor for fast turnarounds. A urethane alkyd enamel gives metal a hard gloss finish.

Epoxy alone chalks and fades in direct Arizona sun, so epoxy belongs indoors or under a sun-rated topcoat. Our counter can spec the full stack for exterior steel.

  • Epoxy — chemical and abrasion resistance for floors, secondary containment, and equipment
  • DTM acrylic — fast, low-odor coat for fences, railings, structural steel, and equipment
  • Urethane alkyd enamel — a hard gloss finish for metal
  • Metal primer — for systems that call for a separate primer coat

The line

The Benjamin Moore HP line

We stock Benjamin Moore HP from waterborne HP Command and acrylic gloss DTM through two-component epoxies.

HP Command is a single-component waterborne coating in gloss and satin, tinted from white, deep and clear bases. The acrylic gloss DTM goes directly onto prepared metal, and the acrylic metal primer is there when the system calls for a separate primer. For floors and containment, the polyamide epoxy and the 100% solids epoxy cover two-component work, and the urethane alkyd gloss enamel gives equipment and railings a hard gloss finish.

  • HP Command (HP3900 gloss / HP3920 satin) — single-component waterborne; tintable white, deep, and clear bases
  • Acrylic Gloss DTM — direct-to-metal acrylic gloss
  • Acrylic Metal Primer — for primer-plus-topcoat systems
  • Polyamide Epoxy — two-component, chemical and abrasion resistant
  • 100% Solids Epoxy — two-component floor epoxy
  • Urethane Alkyd Gloss Enamel — hard gloss finish for metal

Surface prep

Prep drives performance on steel

Even the best coating fails on a dirty or glossy substrate. Start by removing oil and grease (SSPC-SP1 solvent cleaning), then take off loose rust, mill scale, and failing paint with hand-tool (SSPC-SP2) or power-tool (SSPC-SP3) cleaning for most DTM acrylic work.

For two-coat systems, exterior exposure, or more demanding service, a commercial blast (SSPC-SP6) gives the cleaner surface and profile those coatings need to adhere. Always confirm the surface is clean and dry, and check the product data sheet for the prep that matches your system.

  • SSPC-SP1 — solvent clean to remove oil and grease first
  • SSPC-SP2 / SP3 — hand- or power-tool cleaning for most DTM acrylic jobs
  • SSPC-SP6 — commercial blast for two-coat, exterior, or severe service
  • Coat only clean, dry, sound surfaces — verify against the product TDS

Questions we hear at the counter

What does direct-to-metal (DTM) mean?

A DTM coating bonds to prepared metal without a separate primer. Rust-inhibitive resins are built into the product, so you can protect steel in fewer coats than a traditional primer-midcoat-topcoat system.

Should I use epoxy, an enamel, or DTM acrylic?

Choose epoxy for chemical and abrasion resistance, such as floors and containment; a DTM acrylic for fast, low-odor work on railings, fences, structural steel, and equipment; and a urethane alkyd enamel when metal needs a hard gloss finish. Our counter can match the system to your substrate and service.

Do these coatings hold up in Arizona sun?

Waterborne DTM acrylics are low-odor, which suits occupied facilities. Epoxy is the one to watch: on its own it chalks and fades in direct Phoenix sun, so keep it indoors or under a sun-rated topcoat. Ask the counter which topcoat fits your system.

How should steel be prepped before coating?

Remove oil and grease first (SSPC-SP1), then loose rust, mill scale, and failing paint by hand- or power-tool cleaning (SSPC-SP2 / SP3) for most DTM acrylic jobs. Two-coat systems, exterior work, and severe service usually call for a commercial blast (SSPC-SP6). Always confirm against the product data sheet.

How fast can a facility go back into service?

It depends on the product, film thickness, temperature, and humidity. Check the data sheet for the system you choose, or ask the counter and we will point you to the faster-turnaround waterborne options for schools, warehouses, and other spaces that cannot stay closed.

What is the best coating for a warehouse floor?

For interior concrete floors under heavy traffic and chemicals, a two-component epoxy is the usual answer. We stock Benjamin Moore HP Polyamide Epoxy and HP 100% Solids Epoxy; bring the square footage and the service conditions and we will help you pick between them.

Do you stock these coatings or is it special order?

We stock Benjamin Moore HP — HP Command, acrylic gloss DTM, acrylic metal primer, polyamide and 100% solids epoxy, and urethane alkyd gloss enamel — at Arizona Paint Supply in North Scottsdale. Call ahead for large quantities or tinted product and we will have it ready, or place a contractor order at the counter.
